Women, Journalism, and the Workplace Op-Ed Response

A.) This article is about women and how far they've come in society. It tells about how some women are taken for granted. Also, it reviews about how sexual harassment was a regular everyday basis thing.

B.) This affects me personally, because I am a female. I am in journalism and learning to write for our paper "Tiger Rag." It shows how dedicated some women were to their profession and they learned to do many things a guy would do to fit into their roles in society.

C.) One question I have is if another tragic or historical event occurs, will it effect women and their jobs and/or wages? Will they lose jobs or gain jobs? Will they make more money or less money? Another question I have is how can we get society to think more of women in society, their roles, duties, and salary. Will women ever be named equal to men?

  1. Oh my gosh!! I think you're the first one to bring up the sexual harassment issue on here!! It had completely left my mind until now again! I like your questions... thought- provoking...

  2. Haha, thanks. I tried to make some that are kind of brain-teasing I guess.
I think sexual harassment is lame and it should stop, thats why i put that up here so people wont forget about it.
Too bad there arent any boys in this class, excpet Mr. Ayer because I bet this would really get them thinking!

  3. I agree...if I was the woman who got told to leave her skirt open, I would walk out of the interview. Is it even worth it to work for someone like that? Is it worth it to lower and degrade yourself for the sake of getting a job?

  4. I've never thought about another tragedy effecting women like it mentioned in the article about 9/11. Obviously it wouldn't be a good thing but it would be kind of interesting to see if it did, since I don't remember that happening to women.

  5. I could have sworn I already commented on this.
    ...oh well.
Anyway, I do wonder when we women will ever get a decent salary. I mean, there are so many single moms out there that try to support their kids with a job that pays higher wages for men! It irritates me.
Although, it isn't always like that. The job my mom works at is primarily made up of women. It's just that there are so many men in the big boss places in society that we see the women discrimination more often.

  7. Ugh, I totally wonder the same thing Angie, because in most careers women do get put down in some way, maybe not even just salary...

  8. One thing about the sexual harrassment thing that i have noticed is that it is alwasy targeted towards women. Women are alwasy the victums in these situations not men, but I bet that there have been just as many cases of men being sexual harassed as women. Men just don't come forward as often as women because that's just not what they are supposed to do.

  9. I agree Maggie!
Men think their supposed to come off all big and bad or strong.

  10. It's not ALWAYS target towards women, Maggie. And I think the reason that sexual harrassment is seen more towards women then men is because of what other people - like the media - let us see. For some reason, it's more heart wrenching to hear about a woman being sexually harrased then a man, because "Oh, these women are all so helpless. How DARE they!" It's just the way the world view has been shaped.
